Minor in Disabilities in Society

"The Disabilities in Society minor provides opportunities for undergraduates in all colleges to enhance their knowledge of disabilities and to recognize the impact disabilities have on the lives of people who experience them and on the people with whom they live and interact."

Courses I've taken:

  •  EEX3093 Exceptional People in School and Society (final grade: A)

Course Description: People with disabilities are a diverse group of individuals with varied experiences, facets of identity, and perspectives across the lifespan and social institutions. This course draws from multiple perspectives in the social sciences (e.g., psychology, sociology, history) to demonstrate the historical and contemporary complexity of their experiences with schooling and learning, and the impact in society. Schooling, in the traditional sense is viewed in terms of the structure and standardization of specific learning experiences during set a set schedule. Learning, on the other hand, is boundless and can occur incidentally without parameters. Students in the course will understand the complexity of the lives of exceptional people in school and society through the following perspectives: individual (e.g., psychosocial, academic, biomedical), social (e.g., structure, culture, economic), and life course (i.e., transitions P-16 and beyond). Additionally, students will explore the intersection of exceptionality and other facets of identity (e.g., race/ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status [SES]) that can lead to stigmatization and othering. Throughout the course students will engage in activities that create cognitive dissonance and opportunities to reflect on their own perception of self.

  • EEX2000 Impact of Disabilities: Home, Community, and Workplace (final grade: A)

 

​Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide participants with opportunities to learn about (1) how disabilities impact the lives of individuals who have disabling conditions, (2) how the presence of individuals with disabilities enhances diversity in a variety of settings, and (3) how their own experiences compare to those of people with disabilities.  Attention will be given to the impact of disabilities in home, community, and work environments.  Physical, cognitive, and emotional/behavioral disabilities will be considered.​​​

  • EEX3097 Social Perspectives on Disability (final grade: A)

Course Description: This course will cover issues relevant to people with disabilities, their families, and others with whom they interact.  Such interactions occur naturally as individuals with disabilities transition from school age to adulthood and enter community, employment, and other settings.  For this transition process to be effective, it is important that members of society have accurate perceptions of individuals with disabilities.  Toward that end, we will examine historical and contemporary views of people with disabilities as well as disability-related issues with respect to education, inclusion, and advocacy.  We will also examine perceptions of people with disabilities with respect to their acceptance and inclusion in society.  This course will provide a framework for understanding disabilities and disability-related issues within societal contexts.

  • EEX4280 Disabilities in Community and Employment (final grade: A)

Course Description: This course will cover aspects of the community, work, and postsecondary education experience for individuals with disabilities who have transitioned from secondary education to adult settings.  Potential concerns of employers, co-workers, and friends will be addressed to support the transition of individuals with disabilities.  Effective practices will be discussed that foster accepting and supporting environments thus ensuring successful life outcomes.

  • EEX4520 Disabilities: Legal Aspects and Policies (final grade: A)

Course Description: This course will examine the development and enactment of local, state, national and international laws and policies designed to protect the rights of persons with disabilities including Americans with Disabilities Act and other significant legislation. Students will review significant court cases that affect aspects of life for persons with disabilities such as employment, housing, recreation, sports, transportation, and communication. Personal disabilities experiences, as impacted by legislation and policies, will be explored. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) case law addressed cases pertaining to significant rulings under the Employment (Title I), Local and State Government (Title II) and Places of Public Accommodations (Title III) provisions of ADA the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
