Birth of my "grand-calf!"

Writer's picture: Emma ReinischEmma Reinisch

Today my 2 year old show heifer, Abbey, gave birth to her calf! This was incredibly exciting to be a part of after 9 months of nerves, vet visits, and learning. We were worried she may have a difficult birth since he was her first calf, but her labor was quick and smooth, and she has been very maternal so far.

Abbey is a shorthorn cross and was bred to an angus bull. I donated Abbey and her bull calf, named Titan, to a local middle school to help develop their livestock program! Abbey will live out her life on their farm and will be used for breeding, and Titan will be their show steer in 2020. It was great to have found a good home for Abbey and to be able to help out their program- their student were so excited to have a pregnant cow on campus and even threw Abbey a "calf-shower" a few weeks before she was due!
