Breeding My Show Heifer

Over the summer while I was running for district office in FFA, I got to know an agriculture teacher at a local middle school. She knew about my show heifer, Abbey, and was curious of what my plans with her were. I explained the circumstances of my graduating and being in the process of searching for a home for her where she would be able to live out her life and not end up going to slaughter. After some discussion, it came up how I had always wished to breed her but didn't because I didn't want to have to try to find homes for two cows rather than just one.

The teacher offered to breed Abbey with a bull from her ranch and also to provide the home I wanted for my heifer after I graduated. Abbey would become part of the middle school's FFA show team for the duration of her life, and her calves would help to build up their program. We reached the agreement and Abbey spent the summer on her ranch.

I got her back when the school year started so that I could show her, and in December we had our veterinarian come out to confirm her pregnancy. We did a blood test and just found out the results: she is pregnant!

This was incredibly exciting as I had always wanted to breed her since I first got her and thought I wouldn't be able to due to logistically complications. She will be having her calf in late March/early April, and when she calves I will get to see the birth.
