Transformative. Empowering. Introspective. Vulnerable. These are the words I would use to

describe this past weekend, where I had the opportunity to attend Gatorship, an annual retreat hosted by UF’s Office of Multicultural and Diversity Affairs.

Through this experience I got to learn about social justice and how to cultivate my own role in

creating an equitable campus environment. By cultivating strong bonds with like-minded peers and engaging in meaningful dialogue and activities, we explored the social identities of Race, Ethnicity, Gender, Sexuality, Religion, Ability, and Socioeconomic Status. I was exposed to ideas I’d never been exposed to before, and got to interact and form friendships with students I may not have crossed paths with otherwise.

We reflected extensively on our own identities, and particularly on their intersections with each other and other areas of our lives. Breaking down barriers and misconceptions, we not only examined and dissected the systems and institutions of society, but practiced honest self-reflection on our own privileges and parts in these institutions. Rather than spread blame or guilt, we learned how we can use them to create change, in ourselves and in others.

I have left this weekend with greater awareness, a stronger sense of self, and the

empowerment to enact positive change in Gainesville and throughout my life. I learned to think broader, be bold, embrace discomfort, and relate even more to those around me. Inclusive, supportive, and energizing- Gatorship has been the one of the most impactful experiences so far of my time at UF, and I look forward to integrating the meaningful things I learned into my life.

Afterall, what is the Gator Good if it doesn’t include every Gator?
