Learning CPR and AED for Rescue Diving

Writer's picture: Emma ReinischEmma Reinisch

In my Advanced Rescue Diving course we continued our first aid rotations and this week we learned and were certified (through NAUI) in CPR, including both adult, child, and infant CPR and AED usage with one, two, and three people. We practiced many types of situations until we became competent and comfortable in all the techniques and roles (for team situations). We learned about diving specific rescue techniques- such as how unconscious divers in particular should always be administered oxygen when available, how water affects the AED and how to avoid that, and how being offshore would complicate getting medical care. We will continue practicing these techniques and learning more until our "rescue weekend" which is two full days of practicing realistic emergency simulations while performing real dives.
